IPv4 address space consumption
[4 October 2005]
The Internet Protocol Journal for September 2005 includes an article by Tony Hain on IPv4 address space consumption. Hain bases his analysis on IANA to RIR delegations. The article is followed by a roundtable discussion on IPv4 consumption issues with Hain, Geoff Huston, John Klensin, and Fred Baker:
BGP, the movie
Statistics on Internet resources have been animated to provide a high-level overview of the consumption and use of IPv4 addresses and AS numbers since 1983. The animated video also clearly shows the effect of CIDR and RIR allocation policies on consumption rates and routing.

This animation was developed by APNIC staff members, Geoff Huston and George Michaelson.
Internet governance
As more people become aware of the World Summit on the Information Society and of the progress of ICANN, the topic of "Internet governance" is being used more frequently. APNIC is maintaining a collection of articles and references on Internet governance to help the community understand the issues and stay abreast of developments.
IP addressing in China and the myth of address shortage
In recent years, various sources have repeated a myth that the IPv4 address pool is close to exhaustion. Many of these stories also falsely claim that there are fewer IPv4 addresses allocated to China than to some individual US universities. APNIC is committed to countering this myth:
A typical example of an article based on this myth is a report by BBC online, which claimed that IPv4 address space would be exhausted by 2005. Following are several responses to that article which seek to establish the facts:
- Response by RIPE NCC
- Article by Scott Bradner (ARIN Board member)
- Article by Andrew McLaughlin (Harvard Law school, formerly of ICANN)
APNIC's Geoff Huston has conducted an analysis of IPv4 consumption rates, which is available in the following forms:
APNIC and the other RIRs also publish regular allocation statistic reports which are linked from this site.
